Strategy for total donks? Posted: 06-29-2011 04:04 AM |
Hey there,
I was wondering if anyone could give a strategy or link to a strategy explaining how to play against completely awful players in a live tournament? I play a home game regularly with a low buy-in and against players who are simply terrible by regular poker standards.
For example they have no knowledge of how position works at all, they bet according to hand strength and OOP with mediocre hands. Because almost every hand goes to showdown, there are very very very few hands played per hour which makes tight play very frustrating; this leads me to often only have played 2 hands in an entire match if I am blinded out. They can also bluff randomly with no thought and so aren't particularly passive.
Has anyone got a good strategy against this type of match or offer good advice? At the moment I am the biggest winner but not by much and I feel like I should be crushing it even more.
Cheers
(Apologies if this is in the wrong section, I couldn't really find a good place to ask it so I thought the beginner's questions would be quite safe)

I would search for sit n go poker strategies, and if you are not happy with the resulting articles online, then spring for a book like Sit 'n Go Strategy by Collin Moshman.
The reason I suggest SNG strategy is because at a home game, you are talking 1 or 2 tables, right? Most "multi" table tourney strategies won't apply as much.
One quick thought. Even though old conventional wisdom says "tighten up in a loose game and loosen up in a tight game", its not bad to loosen up your starting hand requirements against really bad players who will hang onto bottom pair for their last chip.
In a game where players are loose passive preflop (not a lot of betting or raising before the flop), and then hang onto mediocre hands to the end, then it would make sense to limp into lots of pots and when you hit a great hand, punish the players who can't let go of their hands.
You might also be playing tight in a loose game, but one in which the blinds also go up really fast. If that's the case, then playing tight is a mistake, period. |

Search out for other strategies on other fields as well. In that way, you would be able to make things happen and work it all out for the better and for the long run. Thanks for this one!
