Common Poker Mental Mistakes Posted: 09-07-2010 08:21 AM |
Poker is a mental game, where the outcome is determine by your skill. That being said, winning games in poker will depend on the mental state you are in: your current mood, the level of your focus, your confidence and guts. Conversely, a mental state in flux will also create mistakes that will absolutely destroy everything, from your chances of winning to your bankroll to your win rate.
So, how would you classify a mental state into your winning poker strategy and decide if its time to shift gears or step hard on the brakes?

This is a tricky question because its clear that mental state contributes to things like tilt--and tilt directly contradicts the ability to factor anything into strategy--but if we assume a level, even state of mind for this situation, then I'd probably rate it in the top 3 contributing factors. Of course, I try to maintain a level mental state in all games, but that's always easier said than done, and the subtle shifts are hard to detect. |

Imitating other players
A lot of people learn how to play poker by playing in a fashion similar to other people. They may just imitate others at the table, or they may try to play like a professional they saw on television. This is the wrong way to go about playing poker.
Many people who play poker are simply bad at it. Imitating a poor player means copying a lot of their bad habits. Furthermore, trying to imitate what one saw on television is also a recipe for disaster. What is shown on television is almost always a tournament, and their hands are highly situational. The reasons for the professional's decision probably has little applicability to your own game.
It is important to understand how to make decisions at poker. Succeeding at poker is not done through imitation; rather, it is done through understanding the complexities of the game.

One's mental state and their strategy are two separate issues. Do what you can to put yourself into the right state of mind before playing a session. I usually do something to get my mind focused before each session. This usually involves reading strategy articles or most often, watching a good video on DC.
But that's merely to put me in the right frame of mind to play as close to my A game as possible. If I can get myself into a solid mental state then I'm more likely to play against my opponents in a profitable manner and make the correct adjustments as well as minimize or avoid tilt. |

I wanna addition some common mistake
They are again almost guaranteed to call a bet on the flop and turn as long as no hearts come. When the fourth heart does fall, it kills the action and we win no more money most of the time. The important concept here is to understand that we need to get as much money in the pot when our hand is likely the best. You also need to realize that a lot of cards on the turn or river can stop us from winning any more; therefore we need to maximize our winnings now.
This mistake is by far my favorite, as it usually ends with some poor guy whining in the chat because he lost to someone who had a set and made a full house on the river. It also allows players like myself to see free cards and spike that 2 outer on the river to win the pot. Now that you know what these mistakes are, you now have the knowledge to find and fix them. As an old commercial I used to see all the time would say, “Knowing is half the battle.”
www.plentypoker.com/5-costly-mistakes-poker-players-make The problem with playing these hands is they have little value and can cause you to lose more money than you should when we hit some piece of it. You’re mainly looking to make some sort of flush or flush draw with these hands. |
Online poker rooms like plentypoker, partypoker also allow the players to play for low stakes and often offer poker free roll tournaments (where there is no entry fee), attracting beginners and/or less wealthy clientele. |
