Darts......

Anyone here play competition darts? Just curious.

I play competitively and can handle myself pretty well. I play A grade in my local comp and probably average about 57-60 points a throw, including double starts and finishes. Nothing special but it is okay for the level I play. I have thrown the perfect score (180) about a dozen times or more to date. It always feels good to nail a 180.

The professionals like Phil Taylor and Raymond Van Barneveld average over 100 a throw regularly and sometimes even average over 120 which is extroadinarily good darts.

I'm not sure if it's big in the states, although I know of some big tournaments that are played there. As for darts in the UK.....they are huge! They even have big halls purpose built to host darts tournaments and world championships.

Cheers, Hardmania

That's pretty impressive Hardmania.

My experience goes about as far as playing in my basement as a kid..I'm pretty sure there were no perfect games on my part. These days it is fun to do....especially when a pint or ten is involved, and so by fun I mean dangerous, lol.

As for the UK, they go crazy for their darts! I recall watching a few minutes of various tourney's on TSN/ESPN and the crowd just goes nuts while they throwing. Obviously it would help to know why they're cheering based on the throws but whatever, it's just fun to watch the 'athletes' drinking some booze in between their hands.

Make money money, make money money, make.

Darts aren't a big deal here. Most pool bars have dart boards, but they don't get used all that much. There are a handful of bars that get regular dart throwers (tossers? chunkers?), and there are competitions. But, all in all it isn't all that big here.

Stupid dart story: When I was in high school me and a couple of buddies got drunk and went to one of my buddy's house when his parents weren't home. We decided to play darts and we hung the dart board right in front of his parent's sliding glass door because it was the only part of the living room that didn't have a painting or furniture in front of it. Cost us several paychecks to replace the glass door.

I don't play competition darts, but I do enjoy playing.
I'm pretty bad, probably only average about 30-40 points for each throw, and I can't hit doubles to save my life lol! Being quite short I find it easier aiming for 19 than 20 lol. I haven't ever hit a perfect score (140 is my best effort) and can't remember hitting the bull very often either.

It's a shame darts is fragmented in the UK (into the BDO and the breakaway PDC), it means you don't always see the best players against each other and many of the tournaments are on Sky. It is still big though, with the BDO World Championship (held in one of those halls you mention - Frimley Green) on terrestrial TV very soon. I'll be supporting Tony O'Shea and Darryl Fitton.

i dont play competitively but i do own a darts board and i play it every now and then

im not especially good though, ive never throw a 180, if i do manage to get the triple 20 my next dart always bounces off the previous dart, games of accuracy arent really my strong point.

i can hit the 20 wedge fairly reliably, just gotta line it up and throw, i struggle with the end game though where you must hit the double/triple.

one thing ive never understood is why the bulls-eye isnt the most rewarding space on the board, it almost seems pointless to aim for it since triple 60 space is bigger and the risk of missing the bullseye could wind up hitting any of the 20 outer wedges, at least with the triple 20s as long as you shoot straight then even if you miss you hit the 20.

I can't answer your question on the value of the bull, but if you miss then you probably should hit 25 rather than one of the outer beds and an unplanned for score. The only thing I can offer is that you can end a leg on the bull so to have it worth more than triple 20 would reduce the number of darts needed to finish. It's not necessarily pointless to aim for it though, as you'll need to hit to finish off the higher out shots.

Sadly the World Championship darts didn't go quite to plan for me. Tony O'Shea and Daryl Fitton ended up playing each other in the semi-finals, before Tony went on to lose a thrilling final to Ted Hankey. It may sound sad to some people, but I found it an absorbing final to watch; really edge of the seat stuff. I finally thought it would be Tony's year, but alas, it was not. He's a hero of Stockport anyway and deserved his standing ovation on the pitch when the town's football team (Stockport County) played at the weekend.

Bump...

I doubt I'm the only person from the US who plays darts competitively, but here it goes.

In the US there are generally two types of darts: steel tip and soft tip. Clearly, there is only one REAL darts, and that is steel tip, but there are posers, even in darts.  Wink  I shoot only steel tip and have a decent set of $100 darts.

I've hit a a 140 about a hundred times, but amazingly no ton-80's, though I have hit 6 bulls (double-bull with all three darts, which ain't easy to do! lol)

I'm not an A player, but I'm not E either...I figure I'm about average for competitive darts in the New England area. But I do know there is no other sport where you are encouraged to drink while throwing a deadly weapon! It's great! (And yeah, I've hit someone in the leg before...oops....).

And to address Bobby's question about why triple-20 is worth more than double-bull, my thought has always been that it's because the bull is right at eye level for the average player, and is actually slightly easier to hit because you have a straight shot, whereas the trip-20 is slightly above your natural arm height and you have to throw up to hit it.

But then again, I could be talkin' outta my arse.  Wink  I just know I love darts almost as much as poker.  Big Grin

You might have a point about the triple 20 there, Gray.

The 19's are so much easier to hit than 20 or the bull. Even when drunk I could probably hit the 19 with at least 1 of the 3 darts lol.

Umm, *lawn* darts are not at all what we are talking about, sorry.

Though it is a travesty that the most dangerous children's toy, that has documented cases of killing children and animals, was pulled from the market. Ahh, how innocent we once were (still are?)....lol

Steel tips and only steel tips are the way to go if you're going to buy darts.

I must also point out that if you are going to buy some new darts, try out as many sets/ combos as you can. The store should have a practice board for you to throw at and get a feel for the darts you like. Try different weights, grips, flights and see what works and feels natural.

Also, don't ever buy your darts pre-packaged from a sports store/ supermarket. They are Absolute rubbish and you will be wasting your hard earned.

As for triple 20 being wort more than a bullseye....duh 3x20 = 60. 1x50 =50  Big Grin  I couldn't help myself sorry.

Bullseye, whilst isn't easy in it's own right, it is undoubtably easier to hit than triple 20. That being said, throwing 3 darts into one tiny bullseye is exceptionally difficult due to room issues. 3 x triple 20 is quite difficult also but at least there is some room for you to nail that third dart in triple 20 and score that magical 180!

Then all your mates can shout OOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEE HHHHHHHHUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDRRRRRRRREEEEEEEDDDDDDDD AND EEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHTTTTTTTTTTTTYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!  Big Grin
