First Post / Question about Stars tournaments
Posted: 02-17-2008 03:36 AM
Hi -

I've been playing micro stakes poker online for the last year or two. Specifically, I play <$2.00 MTTs and Sits. I've got my strategy down pretty well, but I want to make it better, and eventually move up in stakes. I didn't know quite what to do to improve my game, but my roommate, aka. trulyrand0m, told me I should join up.

I now play exclusively at PStars, and I play almost every game offered there: 5-card draw, Holdem, Omaha Hi/Lo, Razz, Stud, Stud Hi/Lo, and HORSE-- all limit types.

I had been procrastinating in putting up my first post, but now I have something to actually discuss poker-wise besides my play. I am therefore pushed out of inaction. Looking for something to enter, I noticed that there was an "announced" tourney that already had a person registered. This was odd, since on PStars one can't register until the state switches to "registered." After checking the name of the registered person, beck_AA, I looked for other tourneys with this anomaly. To my surprise, there were 6 more "announced" tourneys with this person registered. So I did what any person nowadays does when they come across something strange: I googled it. I didn't find anything significant about the player except that he's a pocketfives member and he plays a lot. Now I'm thinking that there might either be a glitch in PStars' system, or that there might be something foul going on. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance

I've always assumed that these were people who were given free entry to a tournament as repayment for something that Stars fucked up on (sng freezes up, processing errors, and other random stuff that Stars might repay by giving somebody a free tourney entry).....

I highly doubt it's a glitch in Stars' system as I see this very often, especially for the special/guarantee tourneys.

For a more definitive answer just email Stars support, I'm sure they'll tell you what's going on.

As far as improving your game goes... Probably focus more on one specific game rather than all of them, read poker strategy stuff at this forum and others, and most importantly play lots of hands.

The best advice I can give YOU for improving you skills at mtts and sngs is watch your roommate, and copy everything he does EXCEPT bankroll mgt  Wink

I'd also suggest picking a game you think you like/do well in the best and focus and study that game. Read books, read forum and ask lots of questions in that part of the forum. Not saying you can't mix it up for some fun/variety, but I like playing one game I feel I do really well in, and move up only in that game, I stick to the smaller stacks when playing anything else.

lol @ ignorant people (aka trulyrand0m and nofx :-P :-P)

Pre-Registration:

all you have to do is e-mail starts as ask them to pre-register for a tournament, and they will. a prime example of when you would want to do this would be when you KNOW you're going to be home by 9:05, and tournies start at 9 that you want to play, you will be gone for the registering period and even the late registration period, but you don't want to miss the tournament. you can e-mail stars and ask them to pre-register you, and BAM, you're in.

Cool - thanks all. Personally, I'd prefer another huge online poker scandal - there hasn't been one of those for months.
