Felt like a pro tonight! Got lucky though
Posted: 12-01-2007 10:54 AM
Evening all,

I have had a bit of a lucky weekend, and I'd like to ask some advice from the wealth of knowledge that is the Poker Strategy forums.

I havent played online poker for a while and on a whim on friday night I decided after work to pop $100 into Pacific poker.... I had quite a night and finished on $1,800.. I was ecstatic to say the least! I didnt play properly for my bankroll as I was on $5/$10 tables, which i know is a big NO NO.. so no need to scold me.. i was drinking when i started so i guesss i was playing a bit loose  Smile

Anyway, my bankroll after going back in tonight is now sitting at $3200 waiting to be cashed out and I have $600 im still playing with.

I want to use this $600 to hopefully start a PERMANENT bankroll, so I never deposit into a poker site again.. what limit would you guys recommend I start off at with this cash?

Thanks in advance

hell of a start, congrats and welcome to the forum. Sounds like you aren't playing with scared money... or maybe it was the liquor  Wink  You have to first of all, do what you're comfortable. If you think you were playing well at this level, I'd say keep it up. The best way I find to not be playing scared money is when it's OTHER PEOPLE'S money. You might find the play a lot differant at diff levels and might not work as well. Also, you can't expect this kind of run everyday as I'm sure you're well aware. Variance will raise it's head the other way at some point. Always know you can make a change when you feel it's just not your day. Good luck, let us know how things go.

I'm assuming you were playing at $5/$10 limit... you could have stayed at that level with around $3000 if you're pretty decent. With $600 you're looking at micro stakes NL games ($.10/$.25) or maybe $1/$2 limit.

Hey mckinley.. NBA rocks! Im liking Boston and Golden State this season  Smile

Well I checked in Pacific and theres no poker hands in there..

My most memorable win was when I got AA and I was first in the line.. I had $300 on me...

For the last 15 minutes there had been a lot of raising to $40 pre-flop.. so I decided to put down a $10 and wait for the raise-in.. one guy raised to $40 and 3 guys followed.. then someone raised to $90..

I went all in on them.. I got 3 calls on me for $300.. I won... ended up over $1,000 somewhere.. that was the one that felt best for me because i think if i went all in straight up I would not have got those responses..

Another great one was there was a player who kept on bullying & bluffing people.. out on the flop came a flush draw but it also gave me A-J pairs... I knew this guy was bluffing a lot so he raised me first $100.. then $300.. then another $300.. then $200.. i kept calling.. felt hella nervous as i did.. and ended up winning a lot of cash off him  Smile

I also got my first ever Royal Flush.. though I only got $25 out of it..

My final memorable win was when on the flop I had a 9-10 and Q-7-2 comes out.. knowing I need just the 8 or J i decide to call.. turn blesses me with a J and I made about $900 out of that hand!

Sorry I dont have the hand histories they seem to have been wiped.

I'd really like to stay at this $5/$10 blind level.. I may keep my $3000 and keep going.. i feel like i could win $100 a day.. that'd be enough to keep me happy  Smile

Wait, you were playing $1000 NL?

Even with $3000 you're massively underrolled and will go broke very fast at that level. $3000 is enough to play $100NL (.50/1 blinds), and $200 NL if you're willing to drop down to $100 NL if you lose more than a few buy-ins.

$3000 is enough for 5/10 limit if you're a pretty good player... but I'd prefer to have a few more BB.

You should have 25 buy ins for NL cash..

So, you have $2500 you should be playing NL$200... I would SERIOUSLY suggest dropping down in limits. SERIOUSLY. If you want to keep your $ it would be extremely wise to drop down and learn pot odds/implied odds/hand reading etc.

Im liking Boston and Golden State this season.

You fair weather fan!  Smile

If I were you and you want to start a permanent roll with $600, I'd take it over to Full Tilt Poker, take advantage of their deposit bonus (assuming it's your first deposit) and then get rake back from PSORG.

As far as your run, very nice! Way to spit in the face of bankroll management and come out on top. You da man! Congrats.....just don't blow it all.

Why doesn't it (bad bankroll management) ever work that way for me? lol.

Btw, Golden State is a very underrated team. I'm looking for another second round push again this year from them.

AND I HATE BOSTON AND ITS FANS. FORGET YOU GUYS. Seriously, has Boston ever had a better sports period in history? They have potential to have championships in the three major sports in the same year.

Sick if you ask me lol. Not to mention they stole my beloved KG for nothing  Sad  SCREW YOU MCHALE

Hey guys

Well im living in Australia, so I dont have an allegiance to any one team, I have an allegiance to plays.

Ray Allen, KG, Baron Davis.. these are some of my favorite players in the NBA.. I also love the CLippers because im a huge Sam Cassell fan.

I have been Ray, KG & Baron fans since they're rookie years.

Just an update on my progress..

I decided to press on a bit and I dropped down to $2600.. played a bit loose & silly

anyway igot my shit together and im now up to $5,000 after playing sensibly

Ran into a really annoying player, nearly every time pre flop he would raise to about 5 BB ($50).. it was getting really annoying, but one time he lost $400 to me when i had full house Aces over Kings and he had a 6 & 9.. he was just bluffing the whole way.. so i said to myself just wait.. you'll get him...

Eventually it came.. 30 minutes later.. he does another pre flop raise of $40.. i call.. I have A-10... A - 10 - 6 flops out.

I tense up towards my monitor thinking "This is it.. I got him"

At this point I have $600 on the table & so does he.

He raises $100.. I raise to $200... he calls... 3 comes out...

He raises $200.. I call.... 9 comes out...

He raises $50.. I raise all in.. he calls....

He turns over A-2, I turn over A-10... and his kit is mine  Smile

It was a sweet feeling.

Seriously though with the fishy play im seeing at this limit im thinkin i can press on and make $100 a day as a goal.. that'd be a nice way to build up.

No offense, but you do not sound like you're very good at poker from what you've posted in this thread. If you don't stop playing at this level you will go broke. It's only a matter of time. I say this not to be a jerk, but because I hate to see somebody lose money that they don't have to.

A bit harse, don't you think eks? Maybe not using "tradtitional" bankroll methods, but oviously not playing scared either. On this last hand, sounds like he got his read right, and most importantly WAITED for a good opportunity, then used the information. We all know that his results are way beyond expected returns for any player (pro or not), but it's hard to agrue with success, I'll wait for further updates before I tell him he should quit. I just hope he puts a stop loss on his winnings when variance hits.

I would love to see some hands from those games ....

And if you sit down to NL$1000 with $100 isn't just 10 big blinds ? what would it take to build that 10 big blinds to over 300 big blinds ?

I am not knocking it down but its hard for me to belive in what I see, sure I would like to try that myself but i am just not happy to risk my whole BR on play like this.

Also in the hand when you had T9 and flop was Q72 I think that you needed a runner runner 8 and J to hit your stright ... you said you hit your S8 on the trun with J however that would give you only QJT9 still needing K or 8 on the river to win it ...

who knows - maybe thats the way to play ... hit open ended in the turn but was sure he had it so he calls down a big bet by AA  Wink  and lucks out on the river  Tongue

Oh well .. i will grind my way up (I hope) and let him enjoy while it lasts.

back to the GRIND !!!!!!!!!

I'm with nee on this one. Been there. Originally bought in at stars with $100. Went straight to the $2/$4 tables and ran it up to $275 in one session. Did everything wrong except hit cards. Went broke in a week. Smells very similar.

Hope I'm wrong.

I'll agree with everyone, I think even shroud agrees in his original post, "GOT LUCKY THOUGH" First nite he admits he was drinking, and sounds like he was ready to donk off $100 and got lucky. Later he updates he dropped his br from 3200 to 2600 and had to adjust his game, now it's up to $5000. Now I'm not advacating he should press on until he has a million dollars or busts, but somethings working, and now he has the lucky funds to press on. As long as he puts stop loss in place so he doesn't go tilt one nite and lose it all, I say, don't fix what's not broken. I think we can all agree blackjack isn't the best +EV game, but when I'm on a good run, I press my luck until things change before I back down, I just won't give it all back before I make an adjustment.

Good luck

I'm sorry, but this hand is totally butchered. The regulars at $1000 NL will rip you appart if you play this way.

I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just being honest with him. He's been lucky so far, and he's made some money. Now either take it and play where you've got at least 20 full buy-ins, or withdraw, because if he keeps playing at this level he's going to lose it.

hey no effeks

I know that this kind of play will be 'butchered' by the regulars. I play against some regulars already and I can see how good they are.

As I said in my post, I made a read on that particular players style and used the information to take his entire pot, I dont know what you guys think but I think poker is about making mistakes - and making as few mistakes a s possible. In this case I think its clear I used all info available to me to make the right decision

i've already cashed out my 4 grand i won on the initial earnings.. i have a grand left.. if i lose it then hey im not fussed i made 4 grand.. if i can keep going then good for me  Smile

ill let u guys know how i go.. and hey no offense taken! your welcome to think what you want.. i havent just been lucking out with hitting though, i make plays when im top hand and people are chasing me... thats how im winning my money, by dragging out chasers who dont hit.

---- hope i havent irritated anyone with my posts, i just wanted to share some success i had..

i really appreciate your concern aswell.. but dont worry im not giving up this cash i';ve earnt..
and yes i have a stop plan in place if/when variance hits.

I'm definitely happy for you (and jealous).... I just hate to see somebody lose a four figure sum because of poor money management. I am very glad to hear you cashed some of it out so you are now guarenteed to come out in the black.

Seriously meant no offense and congratulations on the success. With a $1000 roll you're best off playing $25NL, but you could probably get away with $50NL as well. I've got quite a bit more than that and I don't play higher than $.10/.25 blinds.... but I'm a bankroll nit.

It would be great to see you post some in the strat section so you can avoid going busto with the $1000 you still have in your poker account.

Good luck either way.

I'm not sure how the HH's on Pacific work (being an American I can't play there)... from what I remember you needed a seperate program to grab the hand histories in order to get them into Poker Tracker, but I don't know if they have one that works while you're at the table.

This is the internet and it is NOT uncommon for people to tell big tales. I have no proof to say that this is you shroud, but if you have done what you are saying you have done, among the stupid lucky you have been stupid lucky. It can and does happen I guess. Your play that you have shown us so far is just a gutting waiting to happen. Then again, people can only get stupid lucky by playing so stupid...
