Is It Correct To Raise Here? Posted: 04-26-2007 08:59 PM |

Mildly interesting spot. I call the blind on the button in a 6 way limped pot. Flop top pair with a horrible kicker, but have the nut flush draw and position. It checks to the player before me who bets 2/3 the pot. Is this a spot where we want to be raising? Obviously it's best to get this to a heads up pot on the turn, but with the bettor leading and him having 1/2 the max buy-in he's likely to push if he's connected well. So the question is, do we re-open the betting with a raise, and are we willing to call an all-in? I feel that this is a good position to raise in, but what do you guys think?

| why would you want to get heads up here? you have a weak ace that's likely no good, so essentially all you've got is a nut flush draw. if you get down to heads up you're probably against a higher ace, if you raise you chase out any draws. For example somebody has another flush draw, and you could get huge implied odds if you both make the flush. you should call and hope for a few other callers behind you. |

I'll usually call here. Your Ace is probably ahead more often than you think but a raise likely only gets called by better hands. Depends on the table, if I think they will overpay for draws then I would raise. If the semi short stack shoves the turn then I'd be happy to call that too and if he didn't I'd put him all in on any turn.

This situation is sort of similar to my hand

I went for the raise and didnt raise enough from the feedback, and so i think it is a situation of calling or raiseing big.
I think in future and in this hand your playing i would call and hope a lot of others call to.

I think I just call here, we are behind any Ace, and are unlikely to fold an ace with a raise. But we have a nice nutflush draw (and backdoor straight). flat call and hope some of the early position players call behind and build you a nice pot for when you catch your card!

I'll sometimes make a semi-weak raise in position with a good draw, if I think that raise will get me some respect on the hand and let me see a free river card if I need to. Have to have a good read on the players though, you don't want to chase off any weaker hands or draws and you don't want to run into a large re-raise from the initial bettor.
