AJs In Early Position Posted: 01-13-2007 09:20 PM |
Does anyone like to raise in early position with AJs? Is it strong enough? |

I will play this for a raise in the early and late stages of a tournament.
In the early stages, more fish are inclined to call with junk, and if you hit you can expect to enlarge your stack early. Obviously I'm never calling this for a reraise.
In the late stages, people tighten up so much that this will take down blinds that are relatively large compared to stack sizes. By this point in the tournament i think i have a feel for the people im playing with. That, coupled with my opponenets relative stack size lets me know what to do when faced with a reraise, or postflop.
On a different note, i think you need to calm down money. The last 6 posts in the hold'em forum were by you. (just kidding of course. You start some good conversations and debates) |

Shorthanded cash games it's an easy raise, full ring I fold unless the table is really passive, then I might limp it for the flush value.

It depends on my image. Generally I wouldn't raise AJ early, I'll often fold it, but I don't want to sit there for orbit after orbit without raising so when I finally do get AA or KK I raise and everyone folds. If I haven't raised in a while I'll bump AJ UTG purely for image, although I'll do that with any two if I'm going too long between raises. If I get any callers obviously I'm proceeding very cautiously post flop.

Like Nancy Ragan said... "just don't do it" Your probably only gonna get called by hands that dominate you, and it will be hard to know where you are in the hand at later stages. I do at times, but usually kick myself later, I'm kinda hard headed like that

Full table I might limp AJ if play has been tight. Short table it's OK for a raise. Early position full or short handed I may just fold. It seems that's one of the hands that leads to more trouble than good.
So how did you do on your day off. Did you make as much at home as you would have at work? |

tournament or cash game? full ring or shorthanded? tight or loose table? passive or aggressive table? its hard to talk about 1 hand in isolation, let alone 2 cards
I certainly think you could do a lot worse than to raise with it |
