im asking about no limit really, but ill take limit examples
i think this is the most underused and but effictive plays in poker, yet i hardly ever see it happen |

I used to try and do this alot, but ran into too many situations where it failed because the other person checked as well. Now I gnerally go ahead and bet the river if I have a monster hand. I tend to still mix it up a bit. Betting small to try and induce them to raise back, but still getting some value in if they just call. Or betting as big as I think they will call if I think they will call but not raise. The only time I generally try to check raise the river is if I'm playing a very aggressive player, and I have seen them bet all the way, including on the river a few times before. I think check raising the turn has more value if you are pretty sure the other person has TPTK or better. Double their bet on the turn, then bet as much as you hope they will call on the river.

this is really only gonna work against opponents who are not afraid to bet for value on the river even they could check and see a showdown and who are very sticky. a prime target is someone who value bets a lot, this person is easy to spot because they make a lot of stepladder bets, if you check to them on the river you can usually count on them to make a value bet and then you just raise..once you do this once though you cant do it again anytime soon cause your now gonna have your opponent scared you will checkraise them again so you will need to lead out for a while. like all good poker plays this play can work well if used selectively, you cant count on it working multiple times a session, dont expect to get away with this more than once a table. i may try this once when i spot a player like this..ive seen the person tends to do a bit more checking after that, afraid im gonna checkraise them.
usually though if i feel my opponent has a big hand but i have a better hand ill just lead out for a big bet, if i feel he has only a pair then ill try a small river checkraise.
the last time i did this was yesterday in a tourney, i had a pair+ straight draw and called my opponent down. i made my straight on river and checkraised him allin and he called with 2 pair. he probably would have called if i led out for an allin though but i felt like he was too stubborn to check here, he wanted more value. |
