Which Book in your Opinion will best help a 20 year old wanting to win it all? granted i turn 21 August 2004, so WSOP 2005 will be mine, providing i can scratch up the 10 grand you need to play in it championship event... OR try my luck at the limits and lower no limits... i have a nice list of books already, just want to know which one to start with.

Its not so much that I win... its that others lose.

I think the best book to start with, if Hold 'em is your game, is: "Winning Low Limit Hold 'Em" by Lee Jones. (I think hes actually got an updated version of this book, by the way). I think this book is best for most of us, who are recreational players and don't have years of experience under our belts.

The fact is, low limit HE is the most popular game going right now, and this book will give you an edge over most of the competition. One of the most read and most quoted of poker author's is David Sklansky. Anything he's written is definitely worth reading. In fact, you probably already have some of his books ;]...most people do.

Finally, if you're serious about playing WSOP, then its multi-table tourney books that you want to dive into. I havent read this particular book, but its gotten several good reviews from other poker authors: "The Secret to Winning Big in Tournament Poker" by Ken Buntjer. Again, never read it, but I've heard its an excellent tournament strategy book... I hope those help.

What other books have you read? Any that you would suggest?

Hey Coach,
Thanks for the Lee Jones review. I just posted on this forum and you answered one of my questions already. I just wanted to add that the first book I read on Hold'em was "Ken Warren Teaches Texas Hold'em", by well Ken Warren. It was the first book I read and I have been playing for only about 5 months. It was an easy read which I think helps with the understanding. I learned a lot from it but continue to learn from playing and from forums like this one. I just wanted to give my two cents and tell karasz that I'll see him in 2005 at the final table. I'll get there thru the satellites on the internet seeing as I don't have 10 grand sitting aroung  Wink

Thanks

That is my all time favorite as well... I reading a lot of smack on Phil Hellmuth's book ... Play Poker Like a Pro... I personally do not agree with everything but all in all it is a very informative book.... PHIL'S TOP 10 HANDS RAISE TO THE MOON NO MATTER WHAT

AA
KK
QQ
JJ
TT
99
88
77
AK
AQ

now pounding the hell out of 77-99 with AKQ <--flop staring you in the face is just suicide... but Phil says to pound em... Anyhow all in all its a good read..

Flop sets,

If you want to be good NL player, i wouldnt read lee jones or lou kreiger.
hellmuth's not a limit player. So his top 10 limit hands are suspect.

If you want to play NL, read hellmuth's NL section, super system, and every sklansky book. Since you will be playing live poker, caro's book of tells will get you started.

I just started playing and im happy making a couple hundred a month, but if you want to be a champion, good luck, you got a ton of work ahead of you.

Learn limit poker too so you can have a variety of games to play when needed.

I agree with the Lee Jones recommendation and would add Killer Poker and Killer Online Poker by John Vorhaus.

Personally a book that I did not agree totally with but I find quite informative and incredibly interesting is Doyle Brunson's "supersystem." He talks about NL and Limit, and he also deeply describes different flop scenarios as well as proper hand selection etc. If your interested in a copy of the book I have a .pdf file, so send me an email and ill drop it to ya.

Doyle himself has said that "Super System" is out of date, and i agree. Although my favorite quote in there is how he likes to " go to the table and lose his first thousand". I have that down pat Doyle, and I think you will too if you use "Super System" as a guide. Anyways, I think Dan Harrington's book on NL holdem tournaments is supposed to be awesome although I have not read it yet. Anybody out there got it?

If you want to play limit then Id go for the Ed Miller books, his newer book "Getting Started in Hold 'em " is in my opinion a much better starter book than the Lee Jones one.

I've read several limit poker books, and this is IMHO by far the best for new players.

Once you've mastered the basics the book I treat as the bible is Small stakes Holdem. perfect advice for getting into loose low limit games.

For tourneys and NL I have less experience, butI'm very impressed with both Harrington on Holdem, and Kill Phill

Hope this is not in violation of the board rules, if it is, remove and let me know.

We run a Brick N Mortar books store - along with that we do a ton of internet orders through Amazon and Half.com.

I can offer any Poker Book at 38% off of the retail price shipped directly to you from our distributor. We have 4 warehouses across the country TN. PA. IN. and Oregon. Shipping is only 1.50 1st book .50 each additional. Handling adds .65 a book with a maximum fee of 4.00 for handling. This is what the warehouse charges me for shipping.

We also have a large selection of poker books in the store in SC. Some very good condition used, If I read one I Put it back on the shelve as a used book at a discounted price.

My interest has been in No Limit Tournament play, not limit.

I found

0060780193 Phil Hellmuth's Texas Hold'em
I didn't like this book at all. Its the Mass Market version of Hellmuth's Play Poker Like the Pros:
Way too much of "You can do this, but you an also do that, but if you do this that might happen so you might want to do the other." Phil rambles on and on way to much. But its cheap at 6.99 retail.

1580421474 Win Your Way Into Big Money Hold'em Tournament's Tom McEVOY & Brad Daugherty
Very Helpful - A lot of info on how the Satellite tournaments work and differ from normal tournaments. Also offers a lot of strategy. I think you need to read something else first, but this is a good book, just not for the beginner. Retail 29.95

1880685221 Hold'em Poker: For Advanced Players (Advance Player ) Sklansky, David (Author), Malmuth, Mason (Joint Author)
I Loved this book! Great info and easy to read. After trying to read the Hellmuth book I found this one much more to the point. Again Not a good first book. But if you have been playing and at least know the basics its a great book. Retail 29.95

1880685280 Tournament Poker for Advanced Players (Advance Player) Contributor(s): Sklansky, David (Author)
Much of the same info as the non Tournament book - but as the title says the info is presented with Tournaments in mind. Retail 29.95

1580420826 Caro's Book of Poker Tells Caro, Mike
Another worthwhile read. I have only skimmed it and read chapters that interest me so far, but it has helped my play. At least I know what to try and not do to tip off others about my hand. Retail 24.95

1580420818 Doyle Brunson's Super System 29.95
1580421369 Doyle Brunson's Super System II 34.95
Nearly the same book. The earlier one is a few bucks cheaper and the chapters on NL Holdum seem to be exactly the same. I like it so much I bought this one to keep at home, I found it very helpfull, although I don't play Doyle's style - much too aggressive for me. Has excerpts from Caro's book of tells - so you can get a good idea of what’s in that book too. Again unlike Hellmuth's it very direct and to the point on how to play different starting hands – It is Very Thorough – He give you starting hands, then gives strategy on how to play each starting hand with different flops – different 4’ths and 5’ths. It may be outdated, but the game has not changed much. This would be my recommendation for a 1st book to buy on hold’um. I have not read the chapters on other forms of poker, but they look just as detailed as the hold’um chapters. He describes play in ALL of the different games. (Omaha, stud, draw, hi-low, etc) It’s a Large Book (2.3 lbs) 624 pages nearly 2 inches. At 29.95 retail.

That’s the ones I can remember at the moment.

Hi Slimsunccle

Assuming Coach is ok with you posting this here

Can you ship to the UK? how much would shipping cost?

I'd be interested in Hold'em Poker: For Advanced Players and the soon to be released Theory of no limit poker by Miller / Slansky (I think it's due for release next month!)

Generally speaking, it is, and gets deleted.  But 38% discount is juicy enough that I'd hate to delete this post.  Fact is, we're a educational poker site, so this post fits well.  It's not like all of your other posts are hocking off books. ;]

Where are you in TN.?  I live in Murfreesboro...

Responding to your email as well.

That's just a stones throw away then.  What's the warehouse made of?  Got security cameras?  Good or bad lock?
